Ending Violence Against Women: A Call to Action
Violence Against Women (VAW) remains a pervasive issue both globally and locally, according to the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey. The survey showed that almost one in five women in the Philippines experienced emotional, physical, or sexual violence from their current or most recent intimate partner. This alarming statistic presents an urgent call to improve VAW through education, advocacy, and policy implementations. In the context of the 2024 National Women's Month Celebration and the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, there is a necessity to heighten awareness while strengthening actions against this critical concern.
Among the foundational legislation in the Philippines dealing with this problem is Republic Act (RA) 9262, popularly known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004. Such legislation provides that any type of violence, whether it be physical, sexual, psychological, or economic, directed at women and their children by a spouse is deemed a criminal act. RA 9262 has ways of protecting victims: access to protection orders and legal remedies in the name of accountability among perpetrators. Empowering a woman to seek justice leads to a break in that cycle of abuse and can make the community safer in the process.
Another significant law is RA 11313, or the Safe Spaces Act of 2019. This law expanded protection on gender-based harassment, from acts that occurred in public spaces, schools, and workplaces to even online sites. It demands preventive measures and penalties on harassment for the promotion of respect and safety in various spaces. RA 11313 acknowledges the fact that violence against women is not confined within private relationships, hence, an importance of looking into the cultural and systemic issues which lead to abuse and discrimination.Although these laws are the groundwork for change, their success is dependent on public awareness and enforcement. Community efforts in advocacy campaigns, support services for survivors, and educational initiatives are all very important to the creation of a culture of zero tolerance toward violence. Lastly, the eradication of societal norms that foster gender inequality and violence will help to create long-term solutions.
` Let us rededicate ourselves during this 2024 National Women's Month and 18-day Campaign to End VAW to creating a society that will free women and children from violence and fear. Upholding and enforcing laws like RA 9262 and RA 11313 and collective action would help every woman be treated with dignity, respect, and equality. Ending violence against women is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative for a just and equitable society.
